Question: So as of this agreement, nothing from using the schools as shelters comes out of our operating budget? How about capital issues, utilities, etc.? Response: Utilities are an operating budget expense and our agreement with the American Red Cross allows the District to get reimbursed for shelter utility costs such as trash removal and fuel for generators while the facilities serve as a shelter. The District picks up the cost of fuel for testing the generators throughout the year. On the capital budget side the District still pays the total cost for building our schools as hurricane shelters. This includes the cost for the generators, hurricane hardening and water storage tanks. There are also capital costs for repairs and replacement parts to keep the generators and tank systems functioning throughout the year. Joseph M. Moore Chief Operating Officer 561-434-8510
